our Farm

Highland Farm & Garden was started in 2008 as a hobby farm. In the beginning, we raised Scottish highland cattle and had horses and chickens for the first 7 years. Soon, we realized we needed to improve our land, soil, and pastures. We have made a lot of improvements the last six to seven years.

We started seeding, cutting, resting, and rotational grazing our pastures, and we switched to hair sheep from horses and cattle. Along with sheep, we started keeping alpacas and learning fiber arts. Our alpaca yarns and hand knit and woven accessories are truly local grown and made.

We started planting 1200 pawpaw trees in 2016 to establish a pawpaw orchard in our area and to introduce this native but forgotten fruit back to our community, so that people can taste and see this amazing tropical like fruit. The year of 2021 witnessed our 1st pawpaw harvest!

Along the way we planted 500 lavenders and grow vegetables and fruits. We picked up beekeeping for better pollination, and we have since caught and preserve swarms on the farm every year. Many wild flowers, grasses, and cover crops were planted to bring bio-diversities back to the land and to support our honeybees as well as native bees. Our raw honey comes from the wild flowers, trees, and gardens right on the farm. No herbicide or pesticide is used on the farm.

We utilize free ranging ducks and guinea fowls for pest controls. The ducks, guineas, alpacas, and sheep also provide us with excellent natural fertilizer for our gardens, orchards, and pastures.  The duck eggs are 100% pasture raised and hand gathered daily. In spring and summer, we also gather guinea eggs when they are laid in season. Believe it or not, guinea eggs taste just like chicken eggs.

We have our own sawmill to produce lumber from fallen trees on the farm, and we reuse the wood shavings, sawdust, and woodchip from our mill for animal beddings, mulch, and compost.

Our goal is to keep learning, improving, and working with nature rather than against it. Although we are not certified organic, we only use organic and regenerative farming practices in all we do at Highland Farm.

We are open to farm visits by appointment. Feel free to reach out.
